Touring YWCA in SLC
I toured the YWCA in Salt Lake City this week and learned about the amazing number of services they provide there as well as some interesting facts about the facilities themselves:
- First, a fun fact: The original building in the complex was designed by a famous female architect in 1919. It houses the state's first indoor swimming pool! (There's no water in it now, because it could not be brought up to code when it needed repairs. The space is now used to sort and store donations.)
- The Domestic Violence shelter at YWCA Utah is one of 14 statewide, only two of which are eligible to accept federal funds through TANF. Funding is always in short supply! Donations are gladly accepted.
- Their on-site Family Justice Center helps more than 1,000 people a year. It's open to the public, even people who have recently arrived from out of state fleeing domestic violence. They do crisis intervention, risk assessment, police reports, sexual assault testing, protective orders, stalking injunctions...They even have a weekly legal clinic by appointment.
If you know anyone who could use resources related to domestic violence, please let them know about the YWCA at 300 South 300 East in SLC.
