Some bills I'm working on for General Session
I'm excited about the bills I'm working on for the upcoming general session! (Though I am not taking my re-election for granted at all! I'm on pins and needles!) Here are three of the bills I am working on:
- A bill to permanently freeze property taxes on primary residences for retirees under a certain income level. No one should lose his/her home due to skyrocketing property values and correlating tax increases that could not be anticipated at retirement.
- A bill to require pilots of non-commercial aircraft to carry liability insurance. (We have SLC AIrport #2 in our district.) That's right - currently in Utah, liability insurance is required for a car but not an aircraft, so if a plane lands on a car or a house (or a person, in the worst case scenario), the pilot is not automatically liable for damages. You will have to take him/her (or his/her estate) to court. This bill will change that.
- A bill to cap the per minute cost of an inmate phone call from a county jail. The cost is capped from the prison already by the FCC, but we still have predatory phone rates from some county jails, which is very hard on inmate families. We now know that the opposite of addiction is connection, and this bill will facilitate family connection.
